SUPER CRITICAL MASS
DIRECTED BY: Julian Day (2008- ), Luke Jaaniste (2009- ), Janet McKay (2008-2013)
SCM website is now online!
SUPER CRITICAL MASS is an ongoing sonic arts project. It explores spatialised, massed ensembles of performers all playing the same instrument. Instead of the more typical elements of melody and accompaniment, the project focuses on density, texture and architecture. The overall goal is to create super-large ensembles for over 100 performers -- these will become the SUPER MASSES. To this end, we are conducting research and development phases with smaller ensemble clusters through residencies and events -- these are the SUB MASSES.
Performers are sourced locally, both professionals and amateurs alike. Working together under the musical direction of Janet McKay, performers rehearse and perform simple algorithms (generative, memorisable scores) created by the project directors as well as guest composers and sound artists. These algorithms are designed to take into account the performers' interactions with their instrument, each other, and the surrounding space. Audiences can then walk around or sit within the resultant, evolving sound-fields.

UNDER_SCORED micro festival of new sounds
September 14-16, 2012
The Shed, Macarthur Avenue, Hamilton
March 19-20, 2011
Jugglers Art Space, Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley
UNDER_SCORED was an exciting and innovative micro festival of new sounds, presenting performances and workshops from some of Brisbane’s most experienced new music and sound art practitioners, as well as international guests.
UNDER_SCORED featured performances by SHACKLE (Anne La Berge – flute, Robert Van Heumen – laptop, Netherlands), Anna McMichael (violin, Sydney), Clocked Out Duo (Erik Griswold - prepared piano, Vanessa Tomlinson - percussion; Brisbane), Nicholas Ng (erhu, Brisbane), Super Critical Mass (spatialised sonic arts project, Julian Day, Luke Jaaniste, Janet McKay - co-directors, Brisbane/Sydney), Robert Davidson (Double Bass/composer, Brisbane), Lawrence English (sound artist, Brisbane), Benjamin Marks (trombone, Brisbane), Kathleen Gallagher (flute, Brisbane) and Janet McKay (flute, Brisbane). There were also sound installations by Julian Day (Sydney) and art exhibitions by Renata Buziak (Brisbane) and Sharka Bosakova (Brisbane).
UNDER_SCORED continued the Random Overtones commitment to supporting, developing and performing new music. The festivals featured notated and improvised, electronic and acoustic performances side by side. The workshop programs included networking opportunities (Composer Performer Speed Dating), composer/sound artist ‘masterclass’ (Fill This Page With Sound), and interactive sessions on performing with electronics (Converging Objects).

FILL THIS PAGE WITH SOUND
fill this page with sound was a series of open forums for the performance and discussion of new music, between 2009-2012.
fill this page with sound uncovered new sounds, new compositional voices, and new ways of talking about our art.
fill this page with sound aimed to provide a supportive forum to nurture local compositional talent, and to sustain a vibrant network of music creators and music-lovers in Brisbane.
The forums focussed on the works of more than 15 emerging composers/sound artists. Each performance was followed by an open discussion between the composers, performers and audience. Discussion was led by guest composers Rob Davidson (Topology), Lawrence English (ROOM40) and Stephen Cronin (Qld Conservatorium).
